1960's: KAREN'S BULL RUNNER STORY
It was the early 1960's. I was about 11 I think. Mom and Dad had this urge to go visit Aunt Ella and Uncle Dale in western Kansas on their farm. It was Dighton Kansas. This was the first farm they lived on . They later moved to another farm close to Larned Kansas because Aunt Ella went to work has a cook in the Larned State Hospital. So we all loaded up in that old red and white Ford station wagon and headed west to Aunt Ella's farm. Guess we were going to just spend the day there, but I think we spent Saturday and Sunday there. It seems it was Saturday afternoon after lunch that Shuggy May , Aunt Ella's youngest daughter, Pat and I decided to go for a walk. Shuggy wanted to show us around the farm. I was excited I had never been on a farm before. I just knew this was going to be fun. Before we could get out the door Aunt Ella warned us to stay clear of that mean bull . We laughed and said were not going to get close to the bull. So we headed out the door and down the drive to the main country road. When we got to the end of the drive to the main road we stopped to decide which way to go. Just then Shuggy noticed the bull was standing dead in front of us across the road in the pasture. Shuggy said ,"there's that mean bull Mom was talking about. Sometimes he comes right through that fence."She had no more than got those words out of her mouth, when that bull started on a dead run towards us and the fence. Shuggy said "RUN he's going to try to get us." I was not believing my eyes. We wasted no time turning around and running as fast has we could back up the driveway. All I wanted to do was get to that house where I was safe. I never saw him come through that fence, but I could hear him snorting and running behind us. We made it to the entrance of the yard where there were some old junk cars sitting. Shuggy yelled " get on the cars!!" So we all climbed on one of the cars as fast has we could. The bull ran right for us ramming the car trying to knock us off. It was at this point I was just trying to stand up when he rammed the car again dropping me to my knees on the car. I looked down to try to find something to hold on to, that's when I realized..... Oh No... I was wearing RED JEANS. The bull was after ME!! I was terrified now. I was screaming for help. The bull rammed the car again. Where is everybody can't they here us screaming, did they all go somewhere, are they all deaf ?? Just then the front door of the house opened. Thank god someone was going to save us. Who is this? JACK ? Where is he going ? He doesn't see the bull, but the bull sees him. RUN JACK RUN !! Jack turns around and sees the bull coming straight for him. Jack runs around the side of the house and so does the bull. All I could think was he was going to get Jack. Jack is probably 9 years old. Can you imagine what was going through his mind?? We sit waiting on the car to see if Jack would ever appear again. Yep, here he came still running, and the bull right behind him. We all yelled, "RUN JACK RUN !!Jack headed around the house for the second time. By this time I was crying, I knew Jack could not out run that bull the second time and the bull would get him. To my surprise Jack appeared still running and the bull right behind him. Around the house they went again. Suddenly the front door opened. Aunt Ella was standing in the front door. When Jack came around the house the third time Aunt Ella yelled to him to get in the house. Jack made it in the house and the door slammed. THANK GOD... he made it !!! But what about us ??? The bull was still there. Suddenly again the front door opened . It was Aunt Ella again. Out she came with a 2x4 in her hand and smacked that bull has hard has she could across the nose. That bull tore off running to another pasture far off to the west of the house. Aunt Ella yelled "you girls all right?" We yelled back "Yes, Thank God !!" We all climbed down from the car, that we were hanging on to for dear life and ran to the house. I was still shaking all over. My legs felt like JELL-O, and I never left that house the rest of the day. I swore that day to never get close to a bull again.... or did I !!! Just read the other bull runner story.
