DIGGS FAMILY AUDIO RECORDINGs

This first recording was made sometime back in the late 60's by our dad Sammy Diggs. There were several members of the family present while dad secretly recorded their conversations on a tape recorder hidden somewhere in the room. When you listen to this recording you almost have to focus on just one person to help you understand what they are saying. There are several conversations going on and people talking over each other which is a typical "Diggs" trait and custom. As far as we can tell here is the list of those we think were present at this "Diggs" gathering. Sammy (Ellis) Diggs, Ivy Diggs, Howard Diggs, Minnie Diggs, Floyd Diggs, Don Diggs, Bonnie Diggs, Hazel Diggs and Mr. Schroll. If any of the family members can make out who else might of been there...let me know and I will add them to the list.

Step now back into time and listen to what a true "Diggs" family conversation was like so very long ago and hear the voices of some family members...Remember what it was like! What I would give to be able to step back in time and walk into a room where they have all gathered and listen to them talk to each other just one more time...

Hey Brother,
I listened to the recording it was great. I don't remember this gathering. I think it took place after Wally and I were married. You say it was the late 60's. Wally and I were married in June of 67. That was the same year Glen died. It seems this gathering was about the signing of some sort of legal document. Could it be when all dads brothers and sisters gave dad uncle Glens car? The 1960 brown Chevy. Jack should remember this. Do you here the knock on the door? Someone comes in and everyone says hello and then Dad says Jack and Sandy. So Jack had to of been there. Maybe he can shed some light on this gathering.
I am also trying to place Mr. Shuler. Was he the man that lived next to Bonnie on 7th and had the big garden in his back yard for years? Of course this could of been any kind of legal document but they are talking about signing and having it notarized. Don't really know. Just thought this could be some help. It sounds like Bonnie is the one who is reading this. Was it when she bought the house on 7th street? Or Maybe when she sold the house in Yates Center ? Not for sure !!  Anyway it was great to here Mom and Dad and everyone's voices again.

Thoughts From David Diggs: 1/17/2006

Ok...I am starting to hear some talk about this audio recording but no one is emailing me with your thoughts! So I guess I will just have to put down what I have heard. Some of the brothers and sisters think that this recording took place right after our Uncle Glenn Diggs died in a horrible car crash outside of Syracuse, Kansas back in 1967. This is very possible because you hear our Aunt Bonnie Rankin talk about someone being 85 years old. She goes on to tell our Uncle Howard that she is 10 years younger. If you do the math on Aunt Bonnie that brings us to the date of this recording around 1967 or 1968. But the mystery still is unsolved on what the purpose of this meeting was about and why and who needed a notary. What was this document in question? There are many guesses out there but no one seems to know if their answers are correct. Perhaps we need to listen more carefully to the recording...it may give us more clues. Each time I listen to it I learn a little bit more. Turn up those hearing aids out there and listen closely! Let me know what you think...email me with your thoughts! Thanks...

Thoughts From Relda Statz (Diggs): 1/26/2006

Hi David.  I finally figured out how to listen to this.  It has been so long I had trouble picking out your Dads voice. I just went by what he said now and then. Well I think that remark about Bucklin may have been another subject.  To begin with your aunt talks about a woman she worked for. Then I thought Heard Lyons and when they were kids mentioned.  I am probably way off track but I got the impression it may have been something that was willed to your Aunt "Bonnie"? by a woman in Lyons. Or maybe it was an inquiry of some kind that required signatures from people who knew her before her estate could be settled. Sounds like your Dad and Uncles were not going to sign it and something about Bonnie will take care of it (later)? They said if anyone got anything to send it to Bucklin. Maybe your uncle was still alive and he had to see it too.  Or maybe it was another subject altogether about getting something on his affairs. I don't know your family that well and I guess it has been too long since I was able to sort out traffic like that. Interesting. I downloaded it. Your Dad told your Uncle "He had the Goods on him now". Sounds like something my Dad would say. Daddy and Mother got to meet them one time and they all sure had a good time visiting and liked each other really well.  Mother and Ivy had fun comparing notes on "Diggs Men" in general. LOL Sorry I'm not much help. Thanks for sharing. Glad your sister didn't have to lay and suffer like so many do.

These next two tape recordings are from our mom (Ivy Diggs)...Side 1 was recorded on October 9th, 1976 (Saturday)...Side 2 was recorded on October 10th, 1976 (Sunday). Unlike dad's recording...we can actually hear what is being said and we are able to make sense of what she is talking about. Mom had just got her a new tape recorder and radio and she wanted to test it out. So she sent this tape to me by mail when I was living out in Pomona, California. I remember it well and I also recorded one back to her. She might have sent some to the other brothers and sisters...so if any of you have some recordings from mom...let me know and I will put them on the site also. Mom talked about a lot of things on this tape and also reads some of her newly written poetry. Westside Baptist had just finished the "New" church building and she talks a little about that. I think she mentions most of the brothers and sisters on the tape and events that are taking place in their lives. She fills us in on what is happening back home in Hutchinson, Kansas. It is great to listen to and to hear mom's voice. Some of the brothers and sisters...see if you can remember where you were and the events she is talking about. Enjoy the recording and send me your comments!
